New year’s is a good time to reflect on the past year and see how you want to change in the New Year. Many people decide that they wish to create resolutions so that they have goals they want to reach. Often, people start strong, sticking to their plan, but by the end of January, February or March, we may have fallen back into our old habits. Here are ways that you can make your resolutions a success this year.
Create Realistic Resolutions
Whenever you create goals for yourself, it’s important to start small. If you have a big resolution that you want to reach, make smaller goals to help you achieve that resolution. This way, you feel a sense of accomplishment every time you complete a small goal and that gives you motivation to reach your next goal.
Don’t Let Failure Get In The Way
When we fail at something, we often get discouraged and, at times, give up. For example, let’s say that you make the resolution of working out regularly, and one week you just get too busy to work out. After that week, you may just think you’re too busy to workout, so you break your resolution and you stop working out completely. Please remember: it’s okay to fail every once in a while as long as it does not stop you from reaching your goals. Even if you fail more than one time, you can start over and work towards your resolution again.
Focus on the Positives Instead of the Negatives
We often create “negative resolutions” that keep us from doing things that we feel are unhealthy. However, depriving ourselves of certain things shifts our focus to those things, making us want them even more. Instead of deprivation, switch your focus to creating good habits.
Staying accountable with your therapist can also he a good way to make sure that you have the support that you need to keep your resolutions.
