The holiday season is not always the easiest for everyone. We begin to remember people who we have lost or happy times that we can never return to. If the year has not been a pleasant one, we can feel disappointed in ourselves. There is also this pressure to feel joyous, but that only makes the season more difficult when you are dealing with depression or sadness. Here are some ways that you can work to ease your struggles during the holiday season.
Don’t Feel the Need to Be Happy All the Time
People can often feel ashamed if they are not feeling joy like they are supposed to during the holiday season. This shame can make the depression worse. Experience the feelings that you are feeling, but at the same time. Accept the fact that you feel this way and see if you can understand why you feel this way. If there are things that you can change to feel better about your life, then take a few meaningful steps to change them. If there are things that you cannot change, seek to find ways that you can bring your empathy and compassion (and warmth) to what’s feeling hard.
Don’t Get Overwhelmed by the Season
Holiday stress can get overwhelming and this can make us feel even more upset about life. It’s important to step back from all the hustle and bustle of the season and take some time to slow down. If you know that you do get stressed during the holidays, it may be a good idea to discuss your life with a counselor who could help you get some perspective on everything that is happening on your life and help you figure out ways to make the season a little easier.
