Why Can’t You Just Be Happy?
Being happy is a state of mind not always easy to achieve and, sometimes, it may seem unattainable. Why is it, for example, that some people appear happy no matter what awful things may be going in their lives, while others appear to be in a perpetual state of unhappiness when they seemingly have it all?
Some may be enduring struggles that are not outwardly visible:
It can be all too easy to look at someone who seemingly has it all, with a great job, nice home, kids and a doting partner, and condemn them for not being in a permanent state of happiness, but we don’t always know what people are struggling with in their private lives.
A change in life’s circumstances can unbalance the happiness state:
Feeling happy when your life is changing – whether it be for the worse or the better – is not always easy, especially if your views of the world change too, and you begin to feel unsure about all those things you previously believed made you happy. When life settles back down and becomes balanced again, then the individual may begin to feel happy again.
Some may be struggling to cope with a mental illness:
Internal struggles are often the most difficult to deal with and are certainly easier to conceal to the outside world than exterior struggles. A person may appear to ‘have it all’ but be unable to cope due to a mental illness, which may portray them to the outside world as being unhappy or ungrateful for what they have.
If you, or someone you know, is struggling to feel happy or fulfilled due to a mental illness, please seek professional help at the earliest.
Others are not able to see clearly:
It might be easy for you to look at your friend and wonder why they’re not happy when they have so many things to be grateful for, but if they have past traumas that keep them from recognizing those blessings for what they are, then they may struggle to be happy. That said, people can learn to heal and find perspective and see their lives in a new light, and when they do (often with the help of a professional counselor), they can become happier and experience more fulfilled and joyous lives.
Happiness can be a tricky subject to broach and you may find many opinions about happiness that differ wildly from your own. However, if you’re struggling to find happiness and need some caring help, you could consider talking to a professional counselor who will help you identify barriers to your personal happiness, and work with you to overcome them.
